Works in Saldanha

Before a demanding Atlantic crossing, the boat must be in perfect condition.

First, the boat had to be brought to the Saldanha Yacht Port, a two-hour drive north of Cape Town. Experts with enormous, improbable machines carefully lifted the boat out of the water and brought it in front of the hangars where it would be meticulously prepared. Everything below the waterline had to be refurbished. The hull, the propeller, the keel, everything had to be cleaned, sanded, and repainted.

Meanwhile, Anouchka, Lorenzo, and Jean-Baptiste weren't wasting any time. They, too, had work to do. The engine needed servicing, the water tank needed filling, the nets needed repairing, supplies needed tidying up, food and diesel needed refueling, the sails needed inspecting, and so on. There was no shortage of work during the four days the boat was laid up.

Travaux à Saldanha

Avant une traversée de l’Atlantique exigeante, le bateau doit être en parfait état de marche.

Il a d’abord fallu amener le bateau jusqu’au Yachtport de Saldanha, situé à 2 heures de voiture au nord de Cape Town. Des experts avec d’immenses machines improbables sortent le bateau de l’eau avec une infime précaution pour l’amener près des hangars où il sera bichonné. Tout ce qui se trouve sous la ligne de flotaison doit être remis à neuf. La coque, l’hélice, la quille, tout est nettoyé, ponsé et repeint.

Pendant ce temps-là, Anouchka, Lorenzo et Jean-Baptiste ne perdent pas leur temps. Eux aussi ont des travaux à effectuer. Il faut entretenir le moteur, remplir le tank d’eau, réparer les filets, ranger, se ravitailler en nourriture ainsi qu’en diesel, inspecter les voiles etc… Le travail ne manque pas durant ces 4 jours d’immobilisation du bateau.
