Day 32 - 25.02.2026
« Last night on the ocean » Last night around midnight during my night watch I heard bird noises which meant I also had the chance to see these pelagic birds that L saw the previous night. This time I managed to take a photo of the flying couple and after comparing them to our book it seems these birds are actually endemic to South America because they don’t appear in our « Birds of Southern Africa », the resemblance with a shearwater is close but not 100%. Will have to check

Day 31 - 24.02.2026
« A little stowaway » This morning around 5:00am during Lorenzo’s night watch he realised we had a little feathery friend on top of our solar panels. He rested for an hour before flying away again, leaving behind his thank you droppings. L was rummaging through our « Birds of Southern Africa » to try and find what species it was, his conclusion was a shearwater. Another funny story is that JB couldn’t fathom why he had fish scales on his bedding…well he didn’t need to look t

Day 30 - 23.02.2026
Our projected arrival is this thursday afternoon, wind has been constant but got lighter end of this afternoon and evening. We are still managing an average of 5 knots in around 10 knots wind, probably not going to be any faster till we arrive. Another uneventful day, no change in sails, Oxley has been up constantly for the last three days. It was another hot day as well. Tonight Lorenzo made a pork roast with an orange sauce accompanied by a butternut and feta salad, it felt

Day 29 - 22.02.2026
Quite an uneventful day, still on the same startboard tack with the Oxley. Staying on track, heading 288°T directly to Jacaré Marina (Joao Pessoa). We had seared tuna steaks for supper made by JB.

Day 28 - 21.02.2026
This morning we switched back from our asym spinnaker to a poled out Oxley on a starboard tack, the wind is slightly better today and we didn’t need to motor (yaay!). The speed has also gone up a bit, averaging 5.5-6 knots and our heading is 295°T - spot on to Joao Pessoa. Our new ETA will be thursday late morning but there seems to be a drop again in the wind the closer we get to the Brazilian coast so we will see… This evening we had Cape Malay mince curry with home-made ro

Day 27 - 20.02.2026
We had a very good night with our spinnaker up, this morning we had a little rain so we jumped on this opportunity to clean the deck a little bit but as it sometimes happens when it rains, the wind also dies down after. So the engine is now back on since 11:40 GMT-2, we are hoping the Predict Wind previsions are correct and we will have a bit more breeze later this afternoon. The day so far has been cloudy so a bit less hot than previously. We switched the engine off- always

Day 26 - 19.02.2026
Last night around 2am we had to bring our Oxley down because the wind was very weak, only blowing around 4-5 knots. The engine was started and it ran for 9 hours non stop until we reached a windier area with 10-13 knots wind. It is about 30°C inside all the time as the water temperature is now at 28°C constantly, and it won’t be going down. Add the engine heat plus fumes coming from the exhaust (we are downwind remember) makes it quite unbearable. The moment the Oxley was up

Day 25 - 18.02.2026
« Oxley’s rescue » This morning started very well, we were having breakfast at around 10:30, going 5,5kts when suddenly we felt that our speed had dropped down to 3 kts. We quickly realised something was wrong, checked outside through our windows and noticed we couldn’t see the Oxley… So we jumped up and rushed out: the Oxley was attached at its foot but the rest of the sail was dragging in the water on the side of the boat, clearly something had detached from the top of the

Day 24 - 17.02.2026
« Back on track » This morning as early as possible Lorenzo and I removed our vintage asymmetrical spinnaker for light winds and switched back to our Oxley. What a relief to be heading back in the right direction: 288°T, directly to our final destination, Jacarre marina. The wind was back, blowing a steady 10-13 knots. In the end we were only about 23 Nm off track overnight - which we will easily catch up. Technically tomorrow afternoon we will be exactly halfway between Sai

Day 23 - 16.02.2026
This morning around 6:30am GMT-1(the wind had progressively disappeared during the night) so the Oxley was brought down and the engine was started. We had deviated a bit from our course during the night but we preferred to leave the spinnaker manoeuvre for daylight. The temperature also was pretty hot today, we were walking around in our bathing costumes, no wind to refresh us and the engine heating up the inside of the boat... We motored today for a bit more than 12 hours w

Day 22 - 15.02.2026
« Our first tuna! » Light winds around 13 knots this morning, we decided to change our bearing from 287°T to 270°T in order to avoid a patch of calmer winds. So far its 17:07pm GMT-1 and this tactic seems to be going well, we are going a steady 5 knots in less than 10 knots wind. We don’t feel like having to switch on the engine but we don’t want to go slower than 4 knots so we will see. Tonight on the menu is Saint Helenian steak with coleslaw and mash! Just when I was wri

Day 21 - 14.02.2026
Everything smooth so far, Oxley is happily flying downwind and the wind is quite light but we are doing a steady 5,5 knots. Lorenzo decided to bake a vanilla pound cake and to glaze it with the black Côte d’Or chocolate we brought from Belgium. We are quite happy to have a dessert! After the baking we decided to take the drone out for the first time since we left because the wind was light and the Oxley looked nice in the evening sun. JB was ready to catch it with a big fish
